Dear Mr. Keith,

Our college librarian, Ms. Rose Doyle made me aware about your impressive personality and the huge experience you have in the advertising industry. As I will be graduating with a degree in mass communication, I am not sure how to start my career in the advertising sector. She told me to meet you and get your suggestions about career in the advertising industry. Therefore, I am writing to you with an expectation to enrich my knowledge with your priceless suggestions.

I am interested in creative writing since my school days. I have written lots of jingle for local products. Even in college, whenever there is any function, I write the welcome speech for our principal. I have also written a song for our college that was sung by all the students to celebrate our college’s 100th anniversary. My writing is appreciated by my friends and our professors. I am not sure whether my writing could match up the expectation of the advertising industry. I am enclosing few of my creative works for your reading. Please save some time and read through it. I would love to take and implement your suggestions on my writing.

You have been in this field for quite a long time. And you must have seen many creative people in your career. I am not sure how you will rate me on my creativity. Even if you criticize my work, it would be an inspiration for me. I promise you that every single word coming out of your mouth will be preserved in my mind and heart till the end.

I request you to inform me about your convenient time to meet you. Should I call you after five days henceforth to make an appointment? If yes, please mail or call me. Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

John N. Ventura

Mr. Carlos P. Inman,
Charlington  Press,
2525 Fowler Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30303

Dear, Mr. Inman,

I am writing to express my keen interest in the Editorial Assistant position you advertised with the University of Washington's Center for Career Services. I will be receiving my Bachelor of Arts degree in English this coming June, and I am eager to join a small publishing house where I can use my skills in writing, editing, proofreading, research, and critical analysis. Based on my knowledge and objectives, I believe that my educational background and abilities would be an excellent match for the Editorial Assistant position.

Through my academic work in English language, literature, and writing, I am prepared to make meaningful contributions to editorial discussions and to function as a member of your editorial team. In addition to my university training, I have held editorial positions with Bricolage, the University of Washington's undergraduate literary arts journal, and with Steubing Press, a small publishing house specializing in nonfiction and regional publications for the Pacific Northwest. These volunteer and intern positions have provided me with experience in editing, proofreading, fact checking, production scheduling, working with off-site vendors, sales, marketing, and customer service.

My positions with a small publication and a small press have taught me to manage my time efficiently to meet deadlines, adapt readily to new responsibilities, work as a team member, and function well under pressure. The writing skills that I developed through my background with an English major have been further refined in both of these positions, where I learned to write concise, persuasive descriptions of new publications for press releases, catalog statements, and website content. Both positions offered me an in-depth understanding of the important and varied behind-the-scenes work involved in book publishing.

I hope you’ll agree that the combination of my academic training and internship work in publishing has prepared me to meet the demands of a literary editorial position with Charlington  Press. Thank you for your time and consideration. I will contact you within a week to follow up on your opinion.

Sincerely,

(Signature in blue or black ink)

Yong S. Stokely.

Steve Jobs Quits Apple

Steve Jobs have resigned from Apple Inc. on August 24, 2011. He had been with apple for 14 years. Jobs had nominated Tim Cook as his successor. Tim cook (chief operating officer) will take over as CEO of Apple.

Jobs been suffering from pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment for it. He was heard quoting “I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO” on January 5, 2009.

On August 24, 2011, he sent a resignation letter to the board of directors.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.” Jobs will be the chairman of Apple Inc. and Tim Cook will be the CEO. Tim cook was recommended strongly by Jobs, which is not a surprise owing to the fact that he had taken care of the day-to-day operations of Apple Inc. during the medical leave of Steve Jobs. Apple board member, Art Levinson (chairman of Genentech) said “In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

Although a resignation from a CEO seems like all in a day’s work. For the techno geeks, this is like a demise of a hero. After all, he is the man who revolutionized the computers and, most recently, the world of communication.

Best Tips for Professional Cover Letter

A cover letter is an additional document which comes along with the main document. A cover letter provides additional information about the resume or it describes in brief the main content of the resume. In fact in certain cases, the resume is sent as an attachment to a cover letter. Therefore, the cover letter is said to be the backbone of a resume and carries the first impression. It is basically said to be the selling tool for a resume. It is a mirror image of the resume and becomes the next step in the process of an interview. In short it is a short formal introduction of the applicant.

A well written cover letter is acceptable instantly only if the below mentioned tips are followed at the time of its designing. A cover letter is a gist of the resume and gives the employer a background of what the resume is all about. In order to make the cover letter more appealing, the following tips can be used. There are number of websites which provide cover letter samples and resume samples at free of cost, people may use these to create one for their self.

Best tips for writing a Professional Cover Letter:

  • Brief content: The professional cover letter should not exceed the limit of one page. All the important details should be either put in paragraphs or bulleted points. Any kind of flowery language or excessive use of power words should be avoided. This loses the authenticity of the resume and ultimately its quality.

  • Being assertive and proactive: Usage of certain words like ‘I’ should be avoided as much as possible as it can show too much individualism. The applicant should phrase sentences from the view point of the growth of the company. Hence, he or she should mention how his or her skills and special qualities can contribute to the profitability of the company.

  • Tailored to a specific company: The cover letter should be specific to the company, and should not boast unnecessarily about it. By tactfully projecting his/her prior knowledge about the company, the applicant comes across as an interested and motivated candidate and this can swing the fortunes in his/her favor. The applicant should therefore keep abreast of the current knowledge about the company, regarding the events, new launches, research activities, etc.

  • Revision of the Cover letter: Although there are many jobs available under different professions, for every profession the cover would be different. Utmost care should be taken not to send the same cover letter for different types of resumes.

  • Converting Non-professional details: For fresher applicants who do not have any professional experience, their achievements and extra skills can be re-framed in terms of business language. This means that if, the candidate has acquired any merits for extracurricular activities, these can be mentioned in terms of being utilized for the growth of the company.

  • Proofreading: After the complete cover letter has been drafted, it is a good practice to re read it before submitting. The letter should be drafted to an individual only and not to the company as a whole. Proofreading helps in finding errors related to language, spellings and grammar.

Avoid 5 Major Mistakes While Writing A Cover Letter

Cover letter is a formal type of written communication. Cover letter is a short forwarding letter sent along with the resume while applying for a particular post. While your resume must be an impressive presentation of your qualities and qualifications, the cover letter which is to be read even before your resume has to be equally appealing to the potential reader.
I have seen many candidates who are a bit reluctant to spend time on writing a nice cover letter which is wrong. You should be very careful about each and every word that you write in a cover letter. There are a few common mistakes which one might make while writing or typing a cover letter. If you avoid those, success will be nearer than it appears. Here are the 5 major mistakes that we make while writing a cover letter:

1)      Confusion with the addresses: There are two addresses to be written in the cover letter: Sender’s Address and the Receiver’s Address. According to the American modified block format which is now widely used in letter writing, senders’ address i.e. the applicant’s address should come in the beginning on the right hand side in the block format.

2)      Confusion with the Date: The date on which you are writing the letter should come in the left hand side below the sender’s address. People make mistakes while writing the date as well. The standard American format used in letter writing is name of the month followed by the date then a comma followed by the year. So the date should be like September 08, 2004 and not 08/09/2004 or 08 September 2004. These are not the rules but the norms.

3)      Content of the letter: Content is the soul of the letter and you must think twice before finalizing the content of the letter. The cover letter should be short and precise. The important point to be noted here is that the points in the cover letter should be different from the ones mentioned in the resume. You are not supposed to copy down the content from the resume and write the cover letter. Cover letter should lead the potential employer to the resume attached therewith.Writing a long prosy cover letter is wrong. True, you are supposed to present yourself well before the potential employer; but that doesn’t mean you would write pages together praising yourself. Also remember that your tone in the letter should be positive. You should tell how you can prove useful to the employer rather than telling him how his organization will be useful to you.

4)      Concluding part: Never forget to thank the reader for his valuable time spent on your letter and never forget to sign the letter in the end.

5)      Enclosure: Never forget to enclose the resume along with the cover letter. I haven’t seen any worse example of absent mindedness than candidates sending just the cover letter without the resume. I hope you haven’t done this ever.

These are some of the common mistakes that we make while writing a cover letter. To avoid these mistakes, it is better to read some cover letter samples and then write you own letter.

All the best!

What are cover letters and how do they help us?

Cover letters are initial advertisements that enable the recruiter to decide whether to consider or not consider our resume. They can act as an opening to get our profile to the next level of recruitment process.
When applying for a job, we have to be sure about the designation we are applying for and the job profile of the designation. But nowadays there are job portals that hold millions of resume for the easy view of the recruiter. Therefore when you apply for a job, you have to write a cover letter to let the recruiter know that you are a potential candidate for the post.

A cover letter is an introduction to the resume. You have to highlight the points and the information that you think will enable the recruiter to open your resume for further view. Therefore write the letter in a very concise and clear manner so as to help the recruiter read it fast and assimilate the information in an easy manner.
Cover letters are a very useful aid to help you get into the wanted zone of the recruiter. Sometimes, the people applying for a job are so high in number that the recruiter tries to find an easy way to filter them. If the key words that the recruiter is looking for in present in your cover letter, they will pass your resume over to the next level. So take your time to write a cover letter.
Do not write a generalized cover letter. They have to be job specific. They have to talk about your key skills and qualification with respect to the job you are applying for.

How do cover letters help us?

Cover letters help us by engaging the recruiter to consider our resume. They act as a foreground to our profile and credentials.
When a recruiter screens mails to download resume, they usually go through the mail that you have written. So make use of this scope and write a job-specific clear crisp cover letter to get to the next level.
  • They act as an introduction to the resume.
  • They contain key words that the recruiter requires to screen the mails, thus making the job of the recruiter easy.
  • They act as a self marketing tool that gives you the opportunity to market yourself.
  • They help us inform the recruiter why we are suitable for that job.
  • They highlight out potential, useful skills for the job.
  • If they are job-specific, they inform the recruiter that we are interested in the job

Writing a cover letter is not only useful, but it is mandatory to achieve your goal.
